About the program:
Bloomington-Normal, IL has many great youth sports activities for kids year round. However the opportunities for children with special needs are very limited. Easter Seals and the Autism Society of McLean County are partnering to develop a Special Needs Soccer Skills Camp.

The goal of the camp will be to teach soccer skills to children with disabilities of any age. The focus at camp will be on communication and social skills, sharing, turn taking, teamwork, and of course the fundamentals of soccer. We believe the camp will also be an avenue to increase awareness for families and care providers in the community.

Early intervention for childhood disabilities is essential for lifelong success, and autism, while not curable, can be greatly impacted given the right interventions and therapies, these things will allow our kids to live meaningful productive, lives.

Our children need the opportunity to play, learn, and be a part of recreational team sports like soccer; all kids need to be a part of a team. Our plan is to include children with autism and their siblings in the camp; with the sibling being peer mentors and helpers, the camp will also welcome ambulatory children with special needs.

Easter Seals and The Autism Society of McLean County feel that this is a great chance for our kids to be included in recreation, learn valuable skills and have fun with their peers, all while learning to play soccer. As you know children with special needs don't often get the same opportunities to participate and experience the thrill of being a part of a team, build memories and feel like “typical” kids, we feel that this is something every child should have.
