Autism McLean is excited to announce our new Communication Board Grant Initiative.
Communication boards that are placed in locations where individuals with disabilities frequent can help them and their communication partners relate and enjoy the space more effectively
A communication board is a tool that helps individuals with speech or language difficulties express themselves. It typically consists of symbols, pictures, words, or letters that a person can point to – to communicate their thoughts, needs, or feelings. The boards we are offering would be considered a Low-Tech Communication Board
- Low-Tech Communication Boards
- Printed or laminated boards with images, words, or letters.
- Can include categories like food, emotions, or activities.
- Used by pointing, eye-gazing, or touching
The boards can be customized by size and icons, logo’s, and fringe communication items.. We create the icons ourselves so there may be a bit of a delay if we don’t already have the needed icon(s). We can also add ASL Alphabet signs, American Alphabet, Social Story and or Spanish translations.
The grant request includes development and single sided printing of the board. You will be responsible for installing the board. We recommend installing the communication board at a level that can be accessed by someone in a wheelchair or a standing child. If the communication board is going to be outside, an acrylic shield could be placed on the front to protect from vandals.
Board Sizes to consider:
